About the Author:
Anthony Browne is the acclaimed author and illustrator of such prize-winning bestsellers as Gorilla (winner of the Kate Greenaway Medal and the Kurt Maschler Award), Willy the Wizard, My Dad, Voices in the Park(winner of Kurt Maschler Award) and Zoo (winner of the Kate Greenaway Medal). In 2009, Anthony was appointed Children's Laureate, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the world of picture books. Anthony was also the first British winner of the Hans Christian Andersen Award, one of the highest international honours for illustration. His work has been widely exhibited and his books are published all over the world.

PreSchool-Grade 2 ``Knock, knock! Who's there?'' sounds like the beginning of a joke book, but this is actually a bedtime story. Every knock brings a scary creature asking a little girl to let it in, but the only one she allows in is her father, who has come to tell her a bedtime story. This enjoyable read-aloud is illustrated with colorful acrylic paintings and pastel drawings of smiling, friendly looking creatures that add perfectly to the delightful tale. The visual details are wonderful. The eyes of the objects on the little girl's blanket (a bear, an elephant, a moon, etc) grow bigger and look more frightened with each knock at the door, and even the teddy bear craddled in the girl's arms has expressions all of its own. The wallpaper around the door changes, too. For example, when the ape appears at the door, the wallpaper becomes decorated with bananas. The witch is bordered by black cats, the ghost by smaller ghosts, and the giant is outlined by spiked clubs. But each scary creature is wearing the same familiar bedroom slippers as the little girl's father. This story is similar to There's a Nightmare in My Closet (Dial, 1968) by Mercer Mayer; however, this story may inspire children to invent their own ``knock, knock'' versions.
