Kindergarten-Grade 3 Written in a straightforward, factual style, this book describes the responses of 3 children to living with physically disabled siblings: Danielle, 6 years old, whose 9-year-old brother Neil has diabetes; Danny, 10, whose younger brother and sister have asthma; and Rachel, 11, whose 13-year-old brother was born with spina bifida. Each presentation is short, capturing in a series of paragraphs some of the basic problems of living with a disabled sibling and some of the pleasures that brothers and sisters share. The use of large print, quotes from the children, and handsome black-and-white photographs make the design of this book effective for young children. The topic is timely and important, and this book represents a pioneer effort for young readers. The problem that Rosenberg addresses, however, has been vastly oversimplified. The vignettes are too short to present adequately the complexities of living with disabled siblings, and the factual style, while easy to read, shows a resolution to problems which, in some families, may never be resolved. This is a book that needs to be shared by an adult with children, as the afterword, written by a psychologist, explains. Constance A.
