Each of seven animals is featured in a close-up of its ear, fleece, bill, etc., and captioned with a teasing line of description that stops short of giving away the animal's identity. A turn of the page reveals the name of the animal and a brief discussion of its habits, set off by a crisp, full-color photograph. In fact, the masterful color photography captures the essence of the petting zoo, from the woolly, tactile look of a sheep's fleece to the shivery excitement of a llama's eating right out of your hand. Children are warned about goats nibbling at (and untying) their shoelaces, about donkeys smartly unlatching the unsecured gates of their pens, and are invited to watch out for other behaviors when they visit what for many are far from everyday farm animals .
