England 1810. Young Parson Tobias Campion is excited and nervous to be starting at the small parish of Moreton Priory. But his first night in the village brings excitement of the wrong kind when he has to intervene in the attempted rape of housemaid Lizzie Woodman. Even in the normal course of events life in the village is far from quiet, as soon Tobias has to deal with both violent and suspicious deaths which put his character and ministry to the test. But matters come to a head when Lizzie disappears from her employers. What has become of the girl and who is responsible? As Tobias searches for answers they find themselves delving into the dark secrets that haunt Lizzie’s past.

About the Author:
Judith Cutler, Birmingham’s Queen of Crime, began her working life as a college lecturer. She has written nearly forty novels, with protagonists ranging from the nineteenth-century vicar-detective Tobias Campion to Chief Superintendent Fran Harman. Now Jane Cowan joins their ranks. Judith is married to fellow writer Edward Marston, whom she partners in the speaking duo ‘Murder Ancient and Modern’.
From AudioFile:
In 1810 Parson Campion arrives at his first parish and is soon in the middle of several mysteries, which he and the local doctor set out to solve. Paul Ansdell neatly depicts the quintessentially introspective young clergyman. Ansdell uses accents and tone to reflect disparities of class and privilege, a central theme of the novel. He presents as reflective and thoughtful asides Campion's observations as his social conscience becomes much more developed as a parson than it was when he was merely a member of the privileged class. This trait does not necessarily endear him to his parishioners. J.E.M. © AudioFile 2009, Portland, Maine
