A Mountain Adventure follows a party of climbers to the top of Mount Katahdin, the highest peak in Maine. Numerous handsome color photo graphs illustrate the expedition from compulsory registration at the ranger station in Baxter State Park all the way to the mountaintop cairn erected to bring the elevation from its original 5,267 ft. up to exactly one mile. The upward trail is captured in all the au tumn beauty of the lower reaches, giv ing way to the bleak majesty above the treeline and the wonderful vista at the peak. Equally as exciting, A River Ad venture describes a week-long canoe- camping trip along the Allagash Wilder ness Waterway, also in Maine. Again, the color photography invites a you- are-there sensation. The brief texts suffer from an annoying number of ex clamation points and question marks. However, both titles do emphasize the importance of respect for the fragile en vironment, and underline the necessity for observing all the correct safety pre cautions and procedures. Those who are reading for pleasure or planning an outdoor adventure could profit from these readable introductory studies of well-organized camping expeditions.
