This is a prodigious compilation of the history and development of some 400 breeds of dog. Excellent color photographs accompany the text. The authors divide dog breeds into eight categories "according to its stem group, original purpose, and geographical development" and give general characteristics of these. Specific breeds are then listed alphabetically with country of origin, ranges for height and weight, coat type, color, registry, and group. This book is not concerned with the health, care, and feeding of canines like the Complete Book of the Dog , edited by David MacDonald (Smith Pubns., 1986), but it is nevertheless a very fine and beautiful reference work.
