About the Author:
Sharon Torvik, science illustrator, was born and raised in Portland, Oregon. At 18, she received a full tuition scholarship to study art. She went on to earn degrees in fine and applied arts and art education from the University of Oregon. Upon graduation, she taught high school art, then went on to teach and study for a year at a Folk High School in Northern Denmark. Surrounded by fjord, ocean, rural farm life, and nature, she became increasingly interested in nature and conservation education. Sharon became an illustrator and designer for Oregon Fish and Wildlife in 1979, where she worked closely with biologists investigating habits and habitats of many species of fish, birds, and animals. Her home in Portland, Oregon is a short distance to an 11,000 acre wildlife refuge where the varieties of wildlife coming and going are a constant wonder and thrill to observe.
