For tracks, this guide uses a unique process to identify 30 different mammals.

o When the tracks are clear, the book will walk you through a series of simple steps that can lead to identifying the animal.
o If the tracks are not clear, the guide will help you determine the Track Pattern (walking/trotting, bounding, hopping, or waddling). This will help you to identify which mammal left the tracks you are looking at.

For scat, the book uses a unique two-step process. First, the shape is identified (round or cylinder). Next, each shape is divided into more detailed groupings, such as whether the scat is pointed, twisted or blunt. Additionally, there are other identification clues, such as whether the scat contains insects, bones, seeds or hair.

Happy Tracking!

About the Author:
Since 1978, Lynn has been a consulting forester to private landowners, an environmental educator, and a tracker. She has been teaching tracking since 1988. Lynn has co-authored two books: Mammal Tracks and Scat: Life Size-Tracking Guide and Working with Your Woodland: A Landowner s Guide. She has also written Snow Secrets, a fiction tracking adventure book for children in grades 2 to 6. Lynn has taken thousands of people into the forest to share her love of nature, and to spur others to feel the same. She has found that teaching tracking to children, adults, and teachers is one powerful way to spark and enhance that bond. Lynn initiated the Conservation Commission in her town and is still actively involved. Lynn was born in Brooklyn and moved to Vermont in 1974. Four years later, having received her master s degree in forestry from the University of Massachusetts, she became the first female consulting forester in New England. Throughout her career, she has been passionate about protecting the integrity of the forest.
