Discover the history of computers and coding, from Ada Lovelace's initial idea of computer programming to today's coding languages like Scratch, Python, Javascript, and more, in this Level 2 nonfiction reader featuring photographs, diagrams, fun facts, and strong visual clues.

What exactly is a computer? How do they work? What is a code? What are the different coding languages and how are the used today? The Story of Coding, written by GeekDad's James Floyd Kelly, will explore it all, while also building reading skills and teaching exciting vocabulary.

Perfect for 5–7 year olds beginning to read fluently with support, Level 2 titles contain carefully selected photographic images to complement the text, providing strong visual clues to build vocabulary and confidence. Additional information spreads are full of extra fun facts, developing the topics through a range of nonfiction presentation styles such as diagrams and activities.

About the Author:

US-based author James Floyd Kelly is a full-time writer. His latest three books are Digital Engineering with Minecraft, Tinkercad for Beginners, and The Ultimate iPad.

From School Library Journal:
K-Gr 2—A brief history of computer coding is presented in this beginning reader. It also includes its modern uses and suggestions for children who want to learn to code, including some real-world examples. Like many other books designed for emerging readers (this one is defined as "level two"), there are short chapters, large-sized text, and a limited vocabulary for the paragraph (or so) that appears on each page. It allows readers to feel that they are finishing the tome, while respecting their reading level. Several other features, such as the table of contents, glossary, and notes for parents, are helpful in allowing emerging readers to learn the parts of a book. Especially noteworthy are the colorful visuals made up primarily of fresh and engaging photos. A variety of genders and races are portrayed performing the actions discussed. VERDICT A solid choice for beginning readers that presents a factual, historical, and contemporary look at coding with high-quality photos and grade-level appropriate text.—Elizabeth Nicolai, Anchorage Public Library, AK
