This sequel edition contains new works from plays produced in the US and Europe. It offers young actors a broad spectrum of challenges with contemporary styles and relevant topics in a variety of lengths. In addition to the scenes and monologs, the drama book includes nineteen useful exercises for strengthening acting skills. Many of the pieces require that performers dig deep into their imaginations to use their own emotional resources. A short acting preface precedes each selection to help guide the actors' interpretations. Recommended as a theatre text or a supplemental resource for acting classes.

About the Author:

Roger Ellis earned his M.A. in English and Drama from the University of Santa Clara, and his Ph.D. in Dramatic Arts from the University of California at Berkeley. During that time he was also guest stage director for several colleges and universities. He has authored or edited eight books in theatre, plus numerous articles, essays and short stories. In 1991 he initiated an ethnic theatre program at Grand Valley State University in Michigan, creating guest artist residencies and staging plays celebrating cultural diversity.
In addition, he has been director of the University's Shakespeare Festival since 1993. He has worked professionally as an actor or director with various Michigan and California theatres and has served as President of the Theatre Alliance of Michigan for the past six years. He is currently a Professor of Theatre at Grand Valley State University.

Grade 9 Up—Ellis has done a terrific job of selecting interesting and relevant scenes from new, professionally produced plays. The selections range from under a minute to approximately 10 minutes long, making them appropriate for competition or in the classroom. Teachers will appreciate the fairly comprehensive section of tips for preparing selections for competition and exercises in both language use and physicality. Most of the characters range in age from middle teens to middle 20s. Students can choose from scenes for two women, scenes for two men, scenes for a man and woman, or monologs that don't specify gender. There is a good mix of comic, seriocomic, and serious pieces. Prior to each selection, Ellis gives suggestions for characterization and staging, and even offers ideas for students to explore while preparing the piece for performance.
