This edition of the 826 Quarterly contains fiction, non-fiction, and poetry written by authors ages 6-18. The pieces are selected from all of the 826 programs (drop-in tutoring, workshops, in-schools, projects, field trips) and at-large submissions. Pieces are chosen in a traditional literary journal style by an editorial board comprised of students and volunteer tutors.

In this issue, readers will find poems on laziness and the compelling comparison between love and pizza, a frightening photo-based ghost tale, the first-hand impressions of life as a shoe head, a food memoir covering the tasting notes of crocodile, and a practical advice column by middle schoolers.

Like all writing coming out of 826 Valencia, this is by kids for kids, in a language that doesn't talk up or down to the readers, but straight across. Some of the pieces are straightforward, some unusually experimental. The writing is advanced and the themes explore issues that kids are actually interested in and that adults are sure to enjoy as well.

About the Author:
Isaac Fitzgerald has been a firefighter, worked on a boat, and been given a sword by a king, thereby accomplishing three out of five of his childhood goals. He has also written for The Bold Italic, McSweeney's, Mother Jones, and the San Francisco Chronicle. He is the managing editor of The Rumpus.

Wendy MacNaughton has spent most of her life in transit. She lived in LA, NY, Amsterdam, Paris, and East Africa before moving back to her hometown of San Francisco. She is a staff illustrator for Longshot Magazine and her monthly illustrated documentary project "Meanwhile" is published in The Rumpus.

Justin Carder has been working with 826 Valencia as a volunteer, and on the staff, for six years. He is the editor of The 826 Quarterly, and has served on editorial boards for many other 826 publications. He is a writer, designer and artist, and has exhibited work and performed all over the United States. Carder is the Pirate Store and publishing director at 826 Valencia.
Review:
Praise for The 826 Quarterly:
"826 Valencia is a garage for words, open to the public, with willing hands ready to teach these young apprentices how to create and maintain a vehicle of their own. With this book, these young writers have not just constructed an automobile, they have built the finest of American hot rods."
— Isaac Fitzgerald
