No marks. Touch of foxing on page edge. Appears unread. . . . . . . Widely acknowledged as the greatest of his later works, The Tragedy of Pudd'nhead Wilson, is Twain's most searingly ironic vision of race in America. Set in a town not unlike the Hannibal of Twain's youth, the book began life as a slapstick comedy about Siamese twins. But it changed from a farce to a tragedy, Twain tells us, in the course of his writing, and the result was one of the most profound meditations on race and identity an American writer has produced. The voice that dominates this tale is that of Roxana, a light-skinned slave desperate to keep her child from being sold down the river, who switches him in the cradle with the child of her master. Roxana, Twain's most complex and fully-realized adult female character, is a compelling tragic heroine; the plot she sets in motion is daring, risky, and totally riveting. Murder and mayhem precede a courtroom scene that ranks as one of the most memorable in American literature. This conflicted, provocative, richly satirical novel confronts head-on the enigma of what makes us who we are.

Book First Edition
Soft cover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Uncommon journal featuring some of the most influential thinkers of the time and even less commonly found in any kind of decent shape. This copy is fairly well kept and the interior is remarkably clean and fresh. The binding is sturdy, although the spine is slightly rolled, giving some concave action to the front of the book and a slight lean, but this has no bearing on the actual integrity of the binding. Pages are firm within this sturdy binding, though at the front and rear gutters the adhesive shows slightly, again not effecting the integrity overall. There is some stray rubbing to front and back covers, though they are remarkably bright and clean all things considered. Spine edges slightly rubbed. Now in protective mylar, an attractive overall copy of this scarce work. John Cage, Harold Rosenberg, Pierre Chareau, Lionel Abel, Jean Arp, William Baziotes, Paul Goodman, Stanley William Hayter, Charles R. Hulbeck, Richard Huelsenbeck, Joan Miró, Robert Motherwell, Oscar Niemeyer, Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, David Smith, Virgil Thomson, Edgar Varèse, Ben Weber, Paul Rand, Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko.
