Condition: Very good. Harrison, NY: Harbor Hill Books, 1980. 1980. Very good. - Octavo, softcover bound in pictorial cream wraps. There is some minor soiling to the wraps with very light staining to the bottom corner of the front wrap. 32 pages. Black-and-white illustrations. Very good. A reprint, with minor corrections and a new preface, of the edition published in 1885 by the Daily Times, Glen Falls, NY. The new preface points out that Dornburgh's title was a misnomer or a misunderstanding since he appears to assume that the Adirondack region was named from the Adirondack Iron Works, whereas in fact it was the other way round.

green & white illlustrated trade paperback soft cover 8vo. fine cond. binding square & tight. spine uncreased. faint spot on rear cover. edges clean. contents free of markings. first printing (nap) of this facsimile reprint edition. nice clean vintage copy. no library markings, store stamps, stickers, bookplates, no names, inking , underlining, remainder markings etc ~. b&w frontis. portrait (Samuel de Champlain). 316p.+ ads. index. american history. new france. canadian history. british empire. american revolution. history of new york. american indian history. iroquois confederacy. folklore. biography. mythology.~ For lovers of New York's beautiful Adirondack mountains there is no more satisfying reading than this collection of 33 short essays on as many different regions and historical incidents of the North Country, written and first published a century ago. The author covers a wide territory and deals with incidents over a great time span. There are stories about Champlain, Cartier and other early explorers, about the Indians, the early trappers and settlers, and personages such as Nat Foster, Sir William Johnson, Joseph Bonaparte and John Brown. There are separate chapters on the High Peaks, the Indian Pass, Lake George, the Manor of Willsboro, the Chazy, Hudson and St. Lawrence Rivers, Tryon County, Smith's Lake, and much more. As pointed out in a Little Falls Evening Times review " . there is no attempt at continuity in the book, which may be a strength rather than a weakness, as the reader may open it at any chapter and interest himself with a fresh story . " Nathaniel Bartlett Sylvester was born in the village of Denmark, Lewis County, studied law at Lowville and was admitted to the bar at Oswego in 1852. He founded in 1846, and edited for two years, the Lewis County Democrat a newspaper published at Lowville till 1916. In 1866 he was appointedjudge of the U. S. Circuit Court and moved to Troy and it was here that he wrote and published his pioneer histories of Saratoga, Ulster and Rensselaer counties. He died in 1894. The North Country in which he grew up was Sylvester's first love and he knew the wilderness as few others. It was therefore no coincidence that "Historical Sketches", his first book, was devoted to the region of his youth. "This reprint makes available once more a standard source of North Country history, and a volume that is eminently readable, in the mildly romantic tone of 19th century local history". (From a review in "New York History", the Quarterly of the New York State Historical Association.).
