Book
Paperback. Condition: Very Good. This is a journey both into a time and a place - the South of Ireland in the 1940s and 1950s. The author describes a childhood outside the main currents of the twentieth century; her parents still went fox hunting and horse racing and relied on readily available servants from a vast and inexpensive work-pool. At the same time they had no central heating, no television, and the roof leaked. Like many other Anglo-Irish families they attempted outlandish and impractical schemes to maintain deteriorating driveways and crumbling houses. This is an affectionate yet unsentimental memoir of a transitional generation, one born too late to benefit from the last years of the Ascendancy, but too early to integrate into the mainstream of contemporary Irish life. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Soft cover. Condition: As New. First Thus. This as new copy is bound in illustrated card covers as issued and appears unread. The contents are bright, tight, white and square. International postal rates are calculated on a book weighing 1 Kilo, in cases where the book weighs more than 1 Kilo increased postal rates will be quoted, where the book weighs less then postage will be reduced accordingly. A powerful, evocative memoir of an Anglo-Irish childhood set in the vanished world of 1940s Southern Ireland. Where the emotional chill of an aristocratic drawing room is contrasted with the warmth of the servant-filled kitchen. Of the battles to maintain a decaying mansion with a leaking roof and freezing corridors, while the stables must be filled with hunters and no expense spared when it comes to racing. The affectionate humor with which the author describes her eccentric upbringing is interwoven with her acute perceptions of the remorseless social, political and intellectual eclipse of the Anglo-Irish. She has created an enduring portrait of the Anglo-Irish, more than a class but not quite a nation. Ref UUU 1.
